Mackerel and scrambled eggs works well so I can't see wht it wouldn't work in an omelette.

I like watching Come Dine With Me for the petty snobbery and personality clashes. It's not exactly the best programme to pick up cooking tips (none of the buggers seem to know how to properly brown meat, for example) Anyway I've noticed that whenever they have on a contestant who comes from central or eastern Europe or somewhere in the Balkans, they naturally decide to 'treat' their guests to their ethnic cuisine (having first boasted about how their country's cuisine is marvellous) and without fail their cooking goes down like a lead balloon. I'm not surprised. I've never in my life been tempted to try any grub from those regions. Sounds ghastly. Raw herring, sour cream and chopped onion. Jesus Christ.

My new f-i-l was Polish and the first meeting featured raw herring with sour cream and chopped onion....fortunately with lashings of vodka. One mouthful of raw herring (christ almighty) later and I realised I had to get it down no matter what, so I put each chunk in my mouth and swallowed it whole. Oily fish is an acquired taste. Finished my serving before everyone else and had no choice but to accept seconds......thank god for the vodka.

'What about mackerel with custard? "

When I get the courage up, I'm going to try and recreate the ancient Roman dish of pears in garum* and custard.

*Garum = rotten/fermented fish sauce

Coffee, dunno, I always had herring down as jewish or scandi food.

I do love kippers on toast or a decent herring salad, as long as ALL bones are removed

Re: Mackerel in an omelette πŸ€”
The herring is king in Poland as well, mind you I find the recipes a little over-elaborate - all that cream, cheese, beetroot and general faffing around. The best of course comes from Holland and Denmark and I'm happy to say I just had me some top-notch herring at the market in Maasticht on a paper plate with nothing more than chopped raw ONION.

Surely it's the herring? What's a traditional English breakfast without kippers with a poached egg or two? Nothing. Funnily enough, I had kippers yesterday for the first time in about 30 years. Absolutely delicious. Then there's the rollmop, which shows the mighty herring's versatility. (I wonder where the word rollmop came from?)

Re: Mackerel in an omelette πŸ€”
Mackerel is the daddy of fish (along with cod). And its pretty much our national fish.

As another said below, its perfect in Kedgeree, but would have to be small flakes in an omelette as it has a fairly strong taste

As a youngster when I first left home, my cooking skills were appalling.

Just wanted to be out and about after work, and mackerel formed part of one of my staples. Soggy, watery shell shaped pasta, tin of mackerel in tomato sauce, half a tin of uncooked processed peas, more tomato sauce. Wallop.
